The Mount Vernon News Building, located at 18 East Vine Street, stands as a testament to the evolution of local journalism in Knox County. Its origins trace back to 1935, when two rival newspapers, The Democrat Banner and The Republican News, merged to form The Mount Vernon News. This union began a new era in local news coverage, bridging political divides to serve the entire community.

To house the newly formed newspaper, a striking Art Deco-inspired building was constructed at 18 East Vine Street, opening its doors in 1938. The structure reflected the architectural trends of the time, featuring clean lines, geometric forms, and a modern aesthetic that symbolized progress and innovation. For more than four decades, this building was the bustling hub of local reporting, printing, and distribution, providing Mount Vernon residents with timely and reliable news.

An Era of Change

As the newspaper grew, so did the need for additional space. In 1981, the building underwent a significant expansion. This renovation included covering the original Art Deco facade with fluted brick, altering its exterior appearance but reinforcing its role as the cornerstone of journalism in Knox County. Despite the changes, the newspaper maintained its commitment to local, independent reporting, becoming one of the last independent newspapers in the state of Ohio.

However, the media landscape continued to evolve, and in 2020, The Mount Vernon News was sold. Shortly thereafter, the building itself changed hands, as the new owners sold it to the Knox County Land Bank. This transition marked the end of an era for the newspaper’s historic headquarters, but the building remains a symbol of Mount Vernon’s rich journalistic heritage and community engagement.

A Bright Future Ahead

Today, as the structure stands under new ownership, it serves as a reminder of the vital role local journalism has played in shaping Mount Vernon’s identity. Currently, the building is under construction to house Founders Food Hall, the HW Hub for MVNU, and an office suite. The renovations will transform the facade to better align with the historic downtown architecture. While its purpose evolves, its history as the longtime home of The Mount Vernon News will always be an integral part of the city’s story.
